60 participants were given a humanitarian crisis regarding the Rohingyan refugees in Cox's Bazaar. My teams objective was to come up with an innovative solution to mitigate gender based violence (GBV) in Cox's Bazaar through environmental design. My team and I created a solar paneled, portable communication device with a built-in LED light to be located in the individual latrines. GBV occurred mostly at night due to insufficient lighting and most incidents would go unreported due to the social humility and lack of accountability . The device we created allowed a communication channel with local community initiatives which had already been established such as the refugee-led program of boys and men who stood up for equality by travelling across the camp to educate others, and Refugee Leaders Program established by the UN. By placing the communication device in the latrines, it would provide a safe space for incidents to be reported while also lighting up the environment during night to mitigate the risk of GBV. The device we designed would have cost less than $10 per unit and used recyclable materials. Education on installation would be necessary to which we hoped to employ the Technical Assistance Inc. who is already volunteering there.
