About Brendan

I have actually just graduated from the Master of Environment (with Distinction) and am now planning the next phase of my professional life. I have a keen interest in the production and consumption of healthy, ethical, and ecologically sustainable food. Throughout my degree I have undertaken a number of subjects that are directly relevant to this opportunity: 'Food Production for Urban Landscapes' - Engaged with the potential, practicalities and limitations of growing food in an urban context. This included managing my own allotment for a semester, site visits to market gardens, and academic research. 'Sustainable Landscapes' - Explored the inherent socio-ecological relationships with landscapes, how this changes over time, and how it shapes our understandings and interactions. I believe this is important to acknowledge, particularly in an Australian context where the landscape and its associated process have been changed so dramatically. 'Ecological Restoration' - Learnt about the challenges and options for managing remnant vegetation around agricultural regions.
Myself , along with my colleague and friend Jimena, currently co-manage a productive garden for The Community Grocer. Originally an overgrown and abandoned school garden it now supplies vegetables and herbs to those on lower incomes through the local farmers market in Carlton.
I have extensive experience Wwoofing (Willing Workers on Organic Farms) throughout eastern Canada and New Zealand in a variety of organic farms. I also co-managed an edible garden during my undergraduate degree at The University of Adelaide.
I have personally grown food for a number of years and have also kept chickens both in Melbourne and in Adelaide. I am very interested in organic and biodynamic farming, the application of permaculture principles, and just being outdoors amongst the veggies. I'd really love to be a part of Sherdale and have my own car. I am good friends with Eleanor Percival, and have heard many great things about the farm. This would also make the transition process more seamless. Look forward to meeting you soon!
