About Rishana

Hello, I'm Rishana!
I am a Deakin University student approaching my fourth and final year in a Commerce and International Studies degree, majoring in Economics and International Relations, and as a Golden Key Member. I have extensive intercultural communication skills and great global citizenship. My major interests lay with my passion and determination to enhance economic behaviour and ideas to promote greater positive social and environmental change.
During the last three years of my studies, I was fortunate enough to experience two international experiences. In 2018, I was invited to join the Middle Eastern Study Tour and in 2019, I spent majority of the year living in Tokyo. I studied at Sophia University, through an exchange program, where I achieved a HD average and completed an anthropology subject, where we explicitly studied and practiced qualitative research, including interviews and data collection. I worked casually teaching conversational English in Tokyo, where I tapped into my creativity in order to deliver exciting and new classes due to the ambiguous nature of my students' skill's and age of each lesson. Living in the contrastingly different environment of Tokyo meant it was essential I demonstrated problem-solving skills on a daily basis, in order to navigate the foreign social structures and language barriers.
Throughout my degree I have led class projects based on real-world events. One, as an example, was generating a marketing plan and strategy recommendations for the expansion of a female-ride sharing service in Melbourne, where I led my team to focus on modifying their audiences by defining it more explicitly. Moreover, I have closely studied lean innovation, giving me great familiarity with lean startup and design thinking. Additionally, my Economics major has guided me to take classes such as Analytical Methods, which has provided me with extensive practice with quantitative techniques in research.
I have always had a casual or part-time job, whilst studying full-time, since the legal age of beginning work, giving me extensive practice with organisation and time management skills. I am a very hard-working and diligent individual, most especially in a fast-paced environment. You have to obtain these skills in order to be a barista in Melbourne. During my six years of hospitality experience, I have thoroughly developed my people and conversational skills, and pairing with my friendly personality, I make a great team player
Through my solo travels and determination to see the "third-world", I have grown an interest in not only other cultures, but my own. I recently set myself a goal to help develop and reshape Australian culture to reflect values such as equality and community. Thus, I was recently selected for a volunteer position, supporting, mentoring and providing social connection to recently arrived young people from migrant and refugee backgrounds, through a program run by CMY beginning in 2020.
