About Huan

I’m an ongoing master student at the University of Melbourne and I will complete my Master of Engineering (Electrical) at the end of 2018. But I have about one-year work experience related to web development in ThoughtWorks as a software developer and another two internships, one in ThoughtWorks while another one in Stemformatics. Additionally, I was ranked 1/134 and have won National Scholarship in 2012 as well as first-class university scholarship each year, when I undertook my bachelor degree at Xi'an University of Science and Technology, China. My weighted average mark also reaches 76.636 at the University of Melbourne.
With my fast learning abilities, I learned Python and worked on front and back end design and implementation of the new Data Portal prototype in three months. It can help bioinformaticians to search, show and export 300+ datasets. This was using a Python web framework called Pyramid along with a PostgreSQL database running on a CentOS NeCTAR virtual machine. Although this was my first exposure to complicated data as well as cloud computing, it opens a door for me to the data science field and forms my basic understanding of it. Especially after experiencing biomedical terminologies and complicated business logic behind the data during this internship, I believe I will be more comfortable to handle all kinds of data.
I also have worked in ThoughtWorks as a web developer for about 1 year after my bachelor’s degree. During that period, I engaged in development and maintenance of the websites, including delivery of new features, UAT tests, bugs fixing and other supporting tasks. The most impressive thing for me in ThoughtWorks is the frequent rotation among different projects. I have experienced about 5 weeks TW University and two totally different projects in the business background (e-shop/online learning system) and tech stacks (AngularJS + JAVA / React + Ruby). These fast changes have enabled me to adapt quickly to a new environment and gain fast-learning abilities.
During these software development practices, I have been familiar with Git, several languages including both frontend and backend ones (e.g. Python, Java, Ruby, JavaScript, etc.) and related frameworks and tools, as well as some knowledge of database operation and Unix environment. This helps me to lay a solid foundation for the programming skills. The most important is I have a great passion for understanding the nuances of the problem and providing a solution. This is also the motivation source that supports me keep working and learning in this field.
